DST (Daylight Saving Time) Calculator

Enter a location or time zone and a reference date to find out when Daylight Saving Time starts and ends for that region. You'll see the clock change direction (spring forward or fall back), the exact transition dates, and how many hours are shifted — all based on current DST rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Daylight Saving Time (DST)?

Daylight Saving Time is the practice of setting clocks forward by one hour during warmer months to extend evening daylight. In spring, clocks are moved forward one hour ('spring forward'), and in autumn they are moved back one hour ('fall back'). The goal is to make better use of natural daylight during the longer days of summer.

When do clocks change in the United States?

In the US, DST begins on the second Sunday of March (clocks spring forward 1 hour at 2:00 AM) and ends on the first Sunday of November (clocks fall back 1 hour at 2:00 AM). Not all states observe DST — Hawaii and most of Arizona do not participate.

When do clocks change in Europe?

In the European Union, clocks spring forward on the last Sunday of March at 1:00 AM UTC and fall back on the last Sunday of October at 1:00 AM UTC. The EU has discussed abolishing DST, but as of 2025 it is still in effect across most member states.

Which countries do not observe Daylight Saving Time?

Many countries near the equator do not observe DST because day length varies little throughout the year. Notable non-observers include China, Japan, India, most of Africa, most countries in the Middle East (with some exceptions like Iran and Israel), and Russia (which abolished DST in 2014). Within the US, Hawaii and most of Arizona also do not observe DST.

Do clocks always change by exactly one hour?

In most countries that observe DST, clocks shift by exactly one hour. However, there are historical exceptions — Lord Howe Island in Australia, for example, shifts by only 30 minutes. Some countries have shifted by other amounts in the past, but one hour is now the universal standard for active DST regions.

Why do Australia and the Southern Hemisphere observe DST at opposite times to Europe and North America?

The Southern Hemisphere has its summer during the Northern Hemisphere's winter months. So Australian states that observe DST (such as New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia) spring forward in October and fall back in April — the reverse of European and North American schedules.

How does DST affect time zone offsets (UTC)?

During standard time, a time zone uses its base UTC offset (for example, Eastern Standard Time is UTC-5). When DST is in effect, one hour is added, shifting Eastern Daylight Time to UTC-4. This means the UTC offset for a location changes by +1 hour during the DST period and returns to its standard offset when DST ends.

Is Daylight Saving Time being abolished anywhere?

Several regions are actively debating or have taken steps to eliminate DST. The European Union voted to end the practice but member states have not yet agreed on whether to adopt permanent summer or permanent winter time. In the US, some states have passed legislation to observe permanent DST, pending federal approval. As of 2025, most countries that currently observe DST continue to do so.
