Frequently Asked Questions

What is Easter and why does its date change every year?

Easter is the most important Christian festival, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its date changes annually because it is calculated based on the lunar calendar — specifically, it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox (around March 21). This lunisolar determination means Easter can land anywhere between March 22 and April 25.

What is the difference between Gregorian and Julian Easter?

Western Christianity (Catholic and Protestant churches) uses the Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582, to calculate Easter. Eastern Orthodox Christianity continues to use the older Julian calendar method. Because the Julian calendar drifts relative to the Gregorian calendar by about 13 days, Orthodox Easter typically falls 1 to 5 weeks after Western Easter, though occasionally they coincide.

How is the Easter date calculated?

The most widely used algorithm is based on the Computus method. For the Gregorian calendar, it involves calculating the Golden Number (year's position in the 19-year Metonic cycle), the century correction, and determining the Paschal Full Moon date. The first Sunday after that full moon is Easter Sunday. The Julian method uses similar steps without the Gregorian century corrections.

When is Easter in 2025?

In 2025, Gregorian (Western) Easter falls on April 20. Julian (Orthodox) Easter in 2025 falls on April 20 as well — one of the years when both calendars coincide.

What is the earliest and latest Easter can ever be?

Under the Gregorian calendar, Easter can fall as early as March 22 and as late as April 25. The last time Easter fell on March 22 was 1818, and the next time will be 2285. April 25 last occurred in 1943 and will next occur in 2038. The most common Easter date is April 19.

Does Easter repeat on a cycle?

Yes. In the Gregorian calendar, Easter dates repeat on a cycle of 5,700,000 years, but practically the dates cycle through a 532-year period — a combination of the 19-year Metonic cycle, the 28-year solar cycle, and other corrections. The Julian calendar Easter also has a 532-year periodicity.

How many days until Easter this year?

The calculator automatically computes how many days remain from today until the next upcoming Gregorian Easter Sunday. If the Easter date for the entered year has already passed, the counter reflects the next occurrence.

Do all countries celebrate Easter on the same date?

No. Countries that follow Western Christianity (most of Europe, the Americas, and Australia) use the Gregorian Easter. Countries with large Eastern Orthodox populations — such as Greece, Russia, Serbia, Ethiopia, and others — celebrate Easter on the Julian calendar date. Some countries observe both as public holidays.
