Elapsed time is the total amount of time that passes between a start event and an end event. For example, if you start working at 9:00 AM and finish at 5:30 PM, the elapsed time is 8 hours and 30 minutes. It measures duration, not the clock time itself.
Convert both times to 24-hour format (or total minutes/seconds since midnight), then subtract the start time from the end time. The result gives you the duration. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the duration crosses midnight — add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting.
From 3:40 AM to 2:00 PM is 10 hours and 20 minutes. Converting to 24-hour format: 3:40 to 14:00. Subtracting 3h 40m from 14h 00m gives 10h 20m, or 620 minutes total.
Yes. Select 'Yes — crosses midnight' from the Overnight option to indicate the end time falls on the next day. The calculator will automatically add 24 hours to account for the overnight span, giving you the correct elapsed duration.
