Subtract the start time from the end time to get the raw difference. For example, if you start at 9:00 AM and finish at 5:30 PM, the difference is 8 hours and 30 minutes, or 8.5 decimal hours. If the end time is earlier than the start time on the clock, the shift crosses midnight — add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting.
Divide the number of minutes by 60 and add it to the whole hours. For example, 7 hours and 45 minutes becomes 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7.75 decimal hours. Decimal hours are commonly used on timesheets and payroll systems.
If your shift ends on the next day (for example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the end time appears earlier than the start time. Use the 'Shift Crosses Midnight' option in this calculator and it will automatically add 24 hours to account for the day change.
