Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time to get the raw difference. For example, if you start at 9:00 AM and finish at 5:30 PM, the difference is 8 hours and 30 minutes, or 8.5 decimal hours. If the end time is earlier than the start time on the clock, the shift crosses midnight — add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the number of minutes by 60 and add it to the whole hours. For example, 7 hours and 45 minutes becomes 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7.75 decimal hours. Decimal hours are commonly used on timesheets and payroll systems.

What happens if my shift crosses midnight?

If your shift ends on the next day (for example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the end time appears earlier than the start time. Use the 'Shift Crosses Midnight' option in this calculator and it will automatically add 24 hours to account for the day change.

How many hours is 8 AM to 5 PM?

From 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM is exactly 9 hours. If you subtract a standard 30-minute lunch break, your net working time would be 8.5 hours (8 hours and 30 minutes).

How many working hours are in a week?

A standard full-time work week in the US and most of Europe consists of 40 hours, based on five 8-hour days. Part-time schedules vary widely. This calculator helps you verify your daily hours so you can accurately total your weekly time.

How many hours are in a year?

A standard year has 365 days × 24 hours = 8,760 hours total. A leap year has 8,784 hours. In terms of working hours at 40 hours per week, a typical year contains around 2,080 work hours (52 weeks × 40 hours).

What is the difference between 12-hour and 24-hour time?

A 12-hour clock uses AM (midnight to noon) and PM (noon to midnight) with hours running from 12 to 11. A 24-hour clock (military time) runs from 00:00 to 23:59 with no AM/PM needed. This calculator uses the 24-hour format internally but accepts standard time inputs for convenience.

Can I use this calculator to track work hours with a break?

Yes. Enter your clock-in time as the Start Time, your clock-out time as the End Time, and type your break duration in minutes. The calculator will display both the gross time between the two clock times and the net working hours after the break is subtracted.
