A millennium is a period of exactly 1,000 years. The word comes from the Latin 'mille' (thousand) and 'annum' (year). Millennia are commonly used to describe large spans of historical time, such as 'the first millennium AD' covering years 1–1000.
We are currently in the 3rd millennium AD, which spans the years 2001 to 3000. The 3rd millennium began on January 1, 2001 — not January 1, 2000, because there was no year zero in the Gregorian calendar.
A millennium contains exactly 1,000 years. To convert millennia to years, simply multiply by 1,000. For example, 2.5 millennia equals 2,500 years.
Technically, the 3rd millennium started on January 1, 2001.
