Frequently Asked Questions

What is a millennium?

A millennium is a period of exactly 1,000 years. The word comes from the Latin 'mille' (thousand) and 'annum' (year). Millennia are commonly used to describe large spans of historical time, such as 'the first millennium AD' covering years 1–1000.

Which millennium are we currently in?

We are currently in the 3rd millennium AD, which spans the years 2001 to 3000. The 3rd millennium began on January 1, 2001 — not January 1, 2000, because there was no year zero in the Gregorian calendar.

How many years are in a millennium?

A millennium contains exactly 1,000 years. To convert millennia to years, simply multiply by 1,000. For example, 2.5 millennia equals 2,500 years.

Did the new millennium start in 2000 or 2001?

Technically, the 3rd millennium started on January 1, 2001. Because the Gregorian calendar begins at year 1 (not year 0), the first millennium ended on December 31, 1000, making 2001 the true start of the 3rd millennium. However, many people celebrated the milestone on January 1, 2000 due to the symbolic significance of the year.

How do I find which millennium a year belongs to?

Divide the year by 1,000 and round up to the nearest whole number. For example, year 2025 ÷ 1,000 = 2.025, which rounds up to 3 — so 2025 is in the 3rd millennium. This calculator does that automatically and also shows the millennium's start and end year.

How do I convert years to millennia?

Divide the number of years by 1,000. For instance, 5,500 years equals 5.5 millennia. This is useful when dealing with geological, archaeological, or astronomical timescales.

What is the difference between a millennium and a century?

A century is 100 years, while a millennium is 1,000 years. There are exactly 10 centuries in one millennium. For example, the 3rd millennium (2001–3000) contains centuries 21 through 30.

Can this calculator handle years BCE (Before Common Era)?

Yes. Enter negative year values to represent BCE years. For example, entering -500 represents 500 BCE. The calculator will identify the corresponding millennium and show the range accordingly.
