Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the minutes between two times?

Convert both times to total seconds since midnight (12-hour to 24-hour first), subtract the start from the end, then divide by 60. For example, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 570 minutes. This calculator does all of that automatically.

Is noon AM or PM? What about midnight?

Noon (12:00) is PM, and midnight (12:00) is AM. This is a common source of confusion with 12-hour clocks. Technically, 12:00 PM is the start of the afternoon and 12:00 AM is the start of the new day.

What if the time span crosses midnight?

Toggle the 'Spans Overnight' option to 'Yes'. The calculator then adds 24 hours (1,440 minutes) to the end time before computing the difference, correctly handling shifts or durations that run past midnight into the next day.

What is decimal hours and why is it useful?

Decimal hours expresses a duration as a single number (e.g. 1.5 instead of 1 hour 30 minutes). It's especially useful for payroll, billing, and spreadsheet calculations where fractions of an hour need to be multiplied by an hourly rate.

Can I use this calculator for payroll or timesheet purposes?

Yes. Enter your clock-in time as the start and clock-out time as the end. The result shows total minutes worked, hours and minutes, and decimal hours — all of which are commonly used formats in payroll and timekeeping systems.

Why does the calculator include seconds?

Seconds allow for precise duration measurement when you need exact elapsed time — useful for scientific timing, sports, or billing that tracks to the second. If you don't need seconds, simply leave the seconds fields at 0.

What is the difference between total minutes and hours & minutes?

Total minutes is a single continuous number (e.g. 570 minutes), while hours & minutes breaks it into components (e.g. 9 hours 30 minutes). Both represent the same duration — the best format depends on how you need to use the result.

Does this calculator handle times that are in 24-hour (military) format?

This calculator uses 12-hour format with AM/PM selectors. To use a 24-hour time, convert it first: hours 1–11 stay the same (AM), 12 stays as 12 PM, and hours 13–23 become 1–11 PM. Hour 0 is 12 AM (midnight).
