To count months between two dates, subtract the start year and month from the end year and month. Multiply the year difference by 12 and add the month difference. Then check whether any remaining days push you into a partial month. This calculator handles all of that automatically.
A full month means a complete calendar month has elapsed — for example, from January 15 to February 15 is exactly 1 full month. Total months as a decimal would include the fractional portion of any incomplete month at the end of the period.
A leap year has 366 days instead of 365, with February having 29 days instead of 28. Leap years occur every 4 years (e.g. 2024, 2028), except for century years not divisible by 400. When counting months, leap years can affect the remaining days in a partial month.
