Frequently Asked Questions

How is a dog's age converted to human years?

The traditional '1 dog year = 7 human years' rule is an oversimplification. A more accurate method accounts for dog size and breed, since smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger ones. Puppies mature rapidly in their first two years, so the conversion is not linear — early years count for more human-equivalent years than later ones.

Does dog size affect the age conversion?

Yes, significantly. Small dogs (under 20 lb) age more slowly after their first few years and can live into their mid-to-late teens. Giant breeds (90+ lb) age faster and have shorter average lifespans of 8–10 years. This calculator adjusts the conversion based on the size category you select.

How is a cat's age converted to human years?

Cats reach adulthood very quickly — a 1-year-old cat is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old cat to about 24. After that, each additional cat year equals roughly 4 human years. Unlike dogs, cat size doesn't significantly affect the conversion, so all cats use the same formula.

What life stage is my pet in?

Life stages are typically: Puppy/Kitten (0–1 year), Junior (1–2 years), Adult (2–7 years), Mature Adult (7–10 years), and Senior (10+ years). Knowing your pet's life stage helps you choose the right food, exercise level, and veterinary care plan.

When is a dog considered a senior?

This depends on size. Small dogs are generally considered senior at around 10–12 years, medium dogs at 8–10 years, large dogs at 7–8 years, and giant breeds as early as 5–6 years. In human-equivalent terms, senior typically starts around 56–65 human years.

Can I enter my pet's age in months?

Yes. This is especially useful for puppies and kittens under 1 year old, where month-level precision matters most for health and development tracking. Select 'Months' as the age unit and enter the number of months.

Why does the first year of a dog's life count for so many human years?

Dogs reach sexual maturity and near-full physical development within their first year, which takes humans about 15 years. This means early pet years represent a disproportionately large leap in developmental milestones compared to later years.

Is this calculator accurate for all dog breeds?

The calculator uses size-based conversion tables, which are a good general approximation. Breed-specific lifespans can vary — for example, Chihuahuas often outlive Great Danes significantly. For breed-specific insights, consult your veterinarian or a breed-specific lifespan guide.
