Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a working day?

A working day (also called a business day) is any day when most businesses and government institutions are open and operational. In most countries this means Monday through Friday, excluding weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and official public holidays.

How do you calculate the number of working days between two dates?

To calculate working days, count the total calendar days between your start and end dates, then subtract the number of weekend days (Saturdays and Sundays) that fall within that range. Finally, subtract any public or bank holidays that fall on weekdays during that period. The result is your working day count.

Should I include the start date and end date in the calculation?

Conventionally, the start date is included and the end date is excluded, giving the number of working days strictly between the two dates. However, if you need to count the end date as a worked day — for example, a deadline day — you can toggle the 'Include end date' option to add one extra day to the result.

What is a business day?

A business day is essentially the same as a working day — any weekday (Monday to Friday) on which normal business operations take place. Banks, courts, financial markets, and government offices all operate on business days, which is why this count matters for deadlines, payment processing, and contract terms.

How does the calculator handle holidays?

The calculator lets you enter the number of public or bank holidays that fall within your selected period. It then subtracts those from the working day count. Because public holidays vary by country and year, you need to enter the number manually based on the holidays relevant to your region.

Can I use this calculator if weekends in my country are different (e.g. Friday–Saturday)?

Yes. Use the 'Exclude Saturdays' and 'Exclude Sundays' options to control which days are treated as non-working. If your weekend is Friday and Saturday, set Saturday to excluded and Sunday to included, then account for Fridays through the holidays field.

How many working days are in a typical month?

A standard month has roughly 20 to 23 working days depending on how many weekdays it contains and whether any public holidays fall on weekdays. For example, a 31-day month with no holidays typically yields around 21 to 23 working days.

What should I do if my date range spans multiple years?

The calculator handles multi-year ranges automatically — just enter your start and end dates and it will count all working days across the entire span. Remember to add up all public holidays across each year that fall on weekdays within your range when entering the holidays field.
