Frequently Asked Questions

How does the IT Certification Exam Score Calculator work?

You enter each domain or section of your exam along with its official weighting percentage and your estimated score in that domain. The calculator multiplies each domain score by its weighting, sums the results, and gives you a total weighted percentage. It then compares that to the passing threshold you entered to show whether you passed or failed.

Where do I find the official domain weightings for my exam?

Every major certification body publishes an official exam objectives document (sometimes called an exam guide or blueprint). For CompTIA exams, visit comptia.org and download the exam objectives PDF. For AWS, check the official exam guide on aws.amazon.com/certification. For Cisco, visit cisco.com/certifications. Each document lists every domain and its percentage weighting.

What is the passing score for CompTIA Security+?

CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) requires a score of 750 on a scale of 100–900, which equates to roughly 83%. However, because CompTIA uses scaled scoring, enter 75 as a safe estimate or check your official score report for the exact threshold. Always verify the current passing score on the CompTIA website, as it can change between exam versions.

What is the passing score for AWS certification exams?

AWS passing scores vary by exam. The Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) requires 700/1000 (70%), while Associate-level exams like Solutions Architect typically require 720/1000 (72%). Enter the passing percentage for your specific exam in the Passing Score field to get an accurate pass/fail result.

Why don't my domain weightings add up to exactly 100%?

This is common — exam blueprints sometimes round individual domain weightings, resulting in a total of 99% or 101%. The calculator displays the total weighting you entered and still computes your score proportionally. For the most accurate result, try to match the official percentages as closely as possible.

Can I use this calculator for Cisco CCNA or CCNP exams?

Yes. Select Cisco CCNA or CCNP from the dropdown, then manually enter the domain names and weightings from Cisco's official exam topics page. Cisco exams are scored on a scale of 300–1000, with passing scores varying by exam. Enter the passing threshold as a percentage (e.g. 82 for 82%) in the Passing Score field.

How are estimated correct and incorrect questions calculated?

The calculator takes your total weighted score percentage and applies it to the total number of exam questions you entered. For example, a 78% score on a 90-question exam estimates approximately 70 correct answers and 20 incorrect. This is an approximation — actual exams may include unscored pilot questions or use adaptive scoring.

What if I'm using a custom or lesser-known certification?

Select 'Custom / Other' from the exam type dropdown and manually fill in each domain name, its weighting, and your score. The calculator works for any weighted exam format — just make sure the domain weightings you enter reflect the official breakdown from your certification provider's exam guide.
