Frequently Asked Questions

How is my midterm grade calculated?

Your midterm grade is a weighted average of all graded items completed so far. Each score is multiplied by its weight percentage, the products are summed, and then divided by the total weight of completed work. This gives you the percentage you have earned among the portions of the course already graded.

What does 'weight' mean for each assignment?

Weight refers to how much a particular assignment or test contributes to your overall final grade. For example, if a midterm exam is worth 25% of your final grade, its weight is 25. The weights of all items in the course should add up to 100%.

How do I find out what score I need on remaining work to reach my target?

The calculator estimates this automatically. It takes your target grade, subtracts the weighted points you have already earned, and divides by the total weight of work still to be completed. If the required score exceeds 100%, you may need to reconsider your target.

What if one of my scores is entered as points, not a percentage?

Convert your points to a percentage first by dividing your earned points by the maximum possible points and multiplying by 100. For example, 36 out of 40 equals 90%. Then enter 90 in the score field.

Can I use this calculator if my class uses letter grades?

Yes — simply convert your letter grade to its midpoint percentage before entering it. Common conversions are: A = 95%, B = 85%, C = 75%, D = 65%, F = 50%. Your institution may use slightly different scales.

What happens if my total weight adds up to less than 100%?

That just means some graded work is still upcoming. The 'Weight of Remaining Work' field captures what is left so the calculator can tell you the score you need on future assignments to hit your target.

Is 27 out of 40 a passing grade?

27 out of 40 equals 67.5%, which typically corresponds to a D+ on a standard grading scale. Whether it qualifies as passing depends on your institution's policy — many require at least a 60% or 70% to pass.

What if the required score on remaining work is over 100%?

A required score above 100% means your target grade is mathematically out of reach given your current standing and the weight of work remaining. You may want to lower your target grade or speak with your instructor about extra credit options.
