Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my room for carpet?

Measure the length and width of the room at its longest and widest points, including any alcoves or closets. Record measurements in feet and inches for the most accurate result. It is best to measure twice to confirm accuracy before ordering.

How much extra carpet should I order for wastage?

A standard allowance is 10% for straightforward rectangular rooms. For rooms with angles, bay windows, or patterned carpet that needs matching, increase the wastage to 15–20%. It is always better to over-order slightly than to run short.

Why is carpet sold in square yards instead of square feet?

Carpet has traditionally been manufactured and priced in square yards in the United States. One square yard equals 9 square feet. Many retailers still quote prices per square yard, so this calculator converts your room area for you automatically.

Does this calculator account for carpet roll width?

This calculator gives you the total area needed including wastage, which is the most useful figure when shopping. Standard carpet rolls are 12 feet wide (about 3.66 m). Your retailer will use your room dimensions to work out the most efficient cut from the roll — always consult a professional measurer for a precise quote.

Should I include closets and doorways in my measurement?

Yes, include closets if they are to be carpeted. For doorways, measure to the centre of the door opening. Including these areas ensures you order enough material and avoids visible seams in awkward locations.

How do I estimate carpet cost for stairs?

Each staircase typically requires about 25 square feet of carpet, assuming 13–14 standard steps. This calculator adds that figure automatically when you select the number of staircases. Stairs may incur higher installation labour costs, which are not included here.

Is underlay included in this estimate?

No — this calculator estimates carpet material only. Underlay (padding) and installation are priced separately. Ask your retailer for a combined quote that includes underlay and fitting labour so you get an accurate total project cost.

Can I use this calculator for multiple rooms of different sizes?

The multi-room option assumes all rooms share the same dimensions, which is useful for identical bedrooms. For rooms of different sizes, simply run the calculator separately for each room and add the square footage totals together.
