Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Time Card Calculator handle lunch and rest breaks?

Enter unpaid break time in minutes for each day in the Break field. The calculator subtracts those minutes from the total time between your start and end before tallying your worked hours. This way, only actual working time counts toward your weekly total and pay.

Does this calculator handle overtime?

Yes. Set your Weekly Overtime After threshold (default is 40 hours). Any hours beyond that threshold are split into regular hours and overtime hours automatically. If you've entered an hourly rate, gross pay is calculated assuming time-and-a-half for overtime.

What if I work past midnight — can the calculator handle overnight shifts?

Standard time-card calculators assume the end time is after the start time on the same calendar day. For overnight shifts where you clock out after midnight, a workaround is to enter the total shift length in a single day's start/end fields using 24-hour values (e.g., 22:00 to 06:00 the next morning). The calculator adds 24 hours to the end time when the end is earlier than the start to handle this.

Can I use this as a free time card calculator for payroll?

Absolutely. Enter each day's start, end, and break time, add your hourly rate, and you'll get total hours and an estimated gross pay figure you can use as a payroll reference. For formal payroll processing, check the totals against your company's payroll system.

Does this calculator work for biweekly pay periods?

This tool calculates one week at a time. For a biweekly pay period, simply run the calculator for each week separately and add the two weekly totals together. Many employers use a 40-hour-per-week overtime standard, so weekly calculations are the most common approach.

Do I need to download anything to use this calculator?

No download or account is required. The Time Card Calculator runs entirely in your browser. Enter your times, see your results, and optionally record them for your records.

What is a time card and why do I need to calculate it?

A time card (or timesheet) records the hours an employee works each day. Calculating time cards ensures employees are paid accurately, helps managers track labor costs, and provides documentation for compliance. This calculator automates the math so you don't have to add up hours and minutes manually.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours for payroll?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the whole hours. For example, 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7.75 decimal hours. This calculator displays results in both hh:mm format and decimal hours so your payroll figures are ready to use.
