Frequently Asked Questions

What is service tax in India?

Service tax was an indirect tax levied by the Government of India on services provided by businesses. It was administered under the Finance Act, 1994, and was later subsumed into the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in July 2017. This calculator helps compute legacy service tax obligations using the applicable rates.

What is the standard service tax rate?

The standard service tax rate was 12% of the taxable value of services. Including Education Cess (2% of service tax) and Secondary & Higher Education Cess (1% of service tax), the effective rate worked out to 12.36%. Some services had abatements or concessional rates.

What is Education Cess and why is it charged?

Education Cess is levied at 2% on the amount of service tax payable. It was introduced to fund primary education initiatives in India. It is calculated on the base service tax amount, not on the total taxable value.

What is Higher Education Cess?

Secondary & Higher Education Cess is charged at 1% of the service tax amount. Combined with the Education Cess, it forms part of the surcharge on service tax aimed at funding education schemes. Together both cesses add 3% extra on top of the service tax amount.

What does 'Amount includes taxes' mean in this calculator?

If you check 'Amount includes taxes', the calculator treats your entered amount as the gross charge (total paid by the customer including all taxes) and back-calculates the pre-tax gross value and each tax component. If unchecked, the amount is treated as the gross value and taxes are added on top.

What is the difference between Gross Value and Gross Charge?

Gross Value is the taxable value of services before any taxes are applied. Gross Charge is the total amount payable by the customer, which equals the Gross Value plus Service Tax, Education Cess, and Higher Education Cess. The difference between the two is the total tax amount.

Is service tax still applicable in India?

No, service tax was abolished and replaced by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) with effect from 1 July 2017. However, this calculator remains useful for resolving legacy disputes, audits, or calculations pertaining to services provided before July 2017.

How is the effective service tax rate calculated?

The effective rate is: Service Tax Rate + (Education Cess % × Service Tax Rate / 100) + (Higher Ed. Cess % × Service Tax Rate / 100). At standard rates of 12%, 2%, and 1% respectively, the effective rate is 12% + 0.24% + 0.12% = 12.36% of the gross value.
