Frequently Asked Questions

How does a cookie exchange work?

In a cookie exchange, each guest bakes one large batch of a single cookie variety and brings enough for every attendee to take some home. Everyone swaps cookies so each person leaves with a diverse assortment. The standard rule is to bring one dozen cookies per guest attending the event.

How many dozens of cookies do I need to bring to a cookie exchange?

The most common formula is one dozen (12 cookies) per guest for a full-dozen exchange, or half a dozen (6 cookies) per guest for a half-dozen exchange. So if there are 10 guests, you'd bring 10 dozen cookies in a full-dozen exchange. Always bake a small buffer of 10–20% extra to account for breakage or samples.

What is a half-dozen cookie exchange?

A half-dozen exchange follows the same concept but each person brings only 6 cookies per guest instead of 12. This works well for larger groups (15+ people) where baking a full dozen per person would be overwhelming. Each guest still goes home with a variety — just in smaller quantities.

How many batches of cookies do I need to bake?

It depends on your recipe yield. Most standard cookie recipes produce 3–5 dozen cookies (36–60 cookies) per batch. Divide your total cookie count by your recipe's yield to get the number of batches. Our calculator does this automatically when you enter your recipe's cookies-per-batch yield.

How many different types of cookies should I bring to an exchange?

Typically, each participant brings just one type of cookie — that's the whole point of the exchange, so everyone goes home with variety without having to bake multiple types themselves. However, some themed exchanges may allow or request two varieties per person.

What are common cookie exchange mistakes to avoid?

The most common mistakes include not baking enough cookies (always add a 10–20% buffer), choosing a recipe that doesn't travel or stack well, not labeling cookies with the recipe name and allergen info, and underestimating prep time. Make sure your cookies are fully cooled before packaging to prevent sogginess.

How many guests should I invite to a cookie exchange?

The sweet spot is 8–15 guests. Fewer than 6 guests means everyone goes home with limited variety, while more than 20 guests means each person has to bake an overwhelming number of cookies. For very large groups, consider switching to a half-dozen exchange format.

Should I include myself in the guest count when calculating cookies?

Yes — include yourself in the total headcount. Since you are also a participant in the exchange, you need to bake enough cookies so that every person (including you) gets their share from your batch. Our calculator accounts for this when you enter the total number of guests.
