Frequently Asked Questions

How do I food shop wisely during a global pandemic?

Focus on shelf-stable, nutrient-dense staples: whole grains, legumes, canned proteins, and long-life dairy. Buy only what your household realistically needs based on the number of people and duration of quarantine — this calculator gives you those exact numbers. Avoid panic-buying perishables that will spoil before you can use them.

How much food does one person need for a 14-day quarantine?

A typical adult needs roughly 2,000–2,500 kcal per day. Over 14 days that translates to approximately 3–4 kg of grains, 2–3 kg of protein sources, 3 kg of fruits and vegetables, 1–2 liters of dairy, and 0.3 kg of fats and oils. The exact amounts depend on activity level, age, and dietary preferences.

What should I NOT overbuy during a quarantine?

Avoid stockpiling more toilet paper, hand sanitizer, or paracetamol than you personally need for the period — these shortages harm the most vulnerable. Similarly, don't bulk-buy perishable fresh produce you won't consume in time. The goal is a calm, calculated shop, not panic buying.

Is there anything else I need beyond food?

Yes — don't forget household medicines (fever reducers, antidiarrheals, vitamins), hygiene products (soap, sanitizer, sanitary items), pet food if applicable, and baby supplies. A basic first-aid kit and a sufficient supply of any prescription medications are also essential.

How does this calculator account for children?

Children are counted at roughly 70% of an adult's caloric and food requirement. So a household with two adults and one child would be treated as approximately 2.7 adult equivalents when calculating totals. You can adjust the number of children to reflect your exact household composition.

Can I use this calculator for longer than 14 days?

Absolutely. The quarantine duration field lets you set any number of days — 7, 14, 30, or more. The shopping quantities scale linearly with the number of days entered, so a 30-day stockpile will show roughly double the quantities of a 15-day supply.

Does the calculator work for vegetarians and vegans?

Yes. Select your diet type from the dropdown. For vegetarians and vegans, protein sources are calculated using legumes, tofu, lentils, chickpeas, and nuts instead of meat and fish. Dairy alternatives such as plant-based milks are used in vegan calculations.

How much water should I store per person?

Health authorities recommend a minimum of 2 liters of drinking water per person per day. This calculator uses that baseline. During a standard 14-day quarantine for one adult that equals 28 liters. If tap water supply is uninterrupted, stored water is less critical, but bottled reserves are still advisable.
