Frequently Asked Questions

What is a business day?

A business day is any weekday — Monday through Friday — that is not a public holiday. Saturdays and Sundays are typically excluded, though some industries treat Saturday as a working day. This calculator lets you choose whether Saturday counts as a business day.

Which holidays does the calculator skip?

When you enable the 'Skip U.S. Federal Holidays' option, the calculator excludes the 11 official U.S. federal holidays including New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Observed dates (e.g. when a holiday falls on a weekend) are accounted for.

How does the calculator handle holidays that fall on a weekend?

U.S. federal holidays that land on a Saturday are typically observed the preceding Friday, and those falling on a Sunday are observed the following Monday. This calculator uses the observed dates so no business day is accidentally counted as a workday.

Can I subtract business days instead of adding them?

Yes. Use the 'Add or Subtract' dropdown to choose '(−) Subtract' and the calculator will count backwards the specified number of business days from your start date, skipping weekends and holidays in reverse.

Can I use this calculator for international date calculations?

The holiday list in this calculator is based on U.S. federal holidays. For international use, select 'No — Count Holidays as Workdays' to disable holiday skipping, and the calculator will still correctly skip weekends based on your Saturday setting.

Does the calculator account for leap years?

Yes. The underlying date logic fully handles leap years, so February 29th and multi-year spans are calculated correctly without any manual adjustment needed.

What should I do if I need to calculate business days spanning multiple years?

Simply enter your start date and the total number of business days — the calculator will count forward or backward across year boundaries, applying the correct holiday dates for each year in the span.

Does the calculator count the start date as a business day?

No. The start date is the reference point and counting begins from the following (or preceding) business day. For example, adding 1 business day to a Monday returns Tuesday, assuming no holidays.
