Business Days vs Non-Working Days

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a business day?

A business day is any day that is not a weekend or public holiday when normal business operations take place. In most Western countries this means Monday through Friday, excluding national holidays. The exact definition can vary by country or industry.

Does the calculator include or exclude the start and end dates?

By default, the start date is included in the count and the end date is excluded. If you want to include the end date (for example, when counting notice periods), simply check the 'Include end date in calculation' option, which adds one extra day to the result.

How does the calculator handle holidays that fall on a weekend?

This calculator counts weekend days based on your selected work week pattern. It does not automatically account for public holidays — those would already be captured as weekend days if they fall on a Saturday or Sunday. For precise holiday exclusions, you should manually adjust your date range around known holidays.

Can I use this calculator for international date calculations?

Yes. The calculator supports different work week configurations, including the Monday–Friday standard used in most Western countries, Monday–Saturday common in parts of Asia and Latin America, and Sunday–Thursday used in many Middle Eastern countries. Select the work week pattern that applies to your region.

Is two weeks' notice 14 calendar days or 10 business days?

Typically, 'two weeks' notice' means 14 calendar days, not 10 business days. However, some employment contracts specify business days. If you are unsure, check your contract or HR policy. You can use this calculator to find both figures by toggling the include end date option.

What should I do if I need to calculate business days spanning multiple years?

Simply enter the start and end dates in the respective fields — the calculator handles multi-year ranges automatically, correctly accounting for the different number of weekdays and weekend days across the full date span.

Does the calculator account for partial business days?

No, this calculator counts whole business days only. If your period starts or ends partway through a day, you would need to factor in the partial day manually based on your specific requirements.

How many business days are in a typical month?

A standard month on a Monday–Friday work week contains approximately 20–23 business days, depending on the month and how many weekends fall within it. February typically has the fewest and months with 31 days can have up to 23 working days.
