Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my test grade?

Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100 to get your percentage score. For example, if you got 17 out of 20 correct, your score is (17/20) × 100 = 85%. The calculator does this automatically when you enter total questions and number wrong.

How is a weighted average grade calculated?

Each assignment score is multiplied by its weight (as a percentage), and the results are added together. For example, if a test worth 50% gets 90% and homework worth 50% gets 80%, the weighted average is 0.50×90 + 0.50×80 = 85%. Make sure your weights add up to 100% for the most accurate result.

What letter grade corresponds to each percentage?

Standard letter grades are: A+ (97–100%), A (93–96%), A- (90–92%), B+ (87–89%), B (83–86%), B- (80–82%), C+ (77–79%), C (73–76%), C- (70–72%), D+ (67–69%), D (63–66%), D- (60–62%), and F (below 60%). These ranges can vary by institution.

Is 27 out of 40 a passing grade?

27 out of 40 gives a percentage score of 67.5%, which typically corresponds to a D+ letter grade. Whether it is considered passing depends on your school or institution — many require at least a D (60%) to pass, but some courses require a C (73%) or higher.

What grade is 7 wrong out of 40?

If you get 7 questions wrong out of 40, you answered 33 correctly. That gives a score of (33/40) × 100 = 82.5%, which is a B- letter grade under a standard grading scale.

Is 75 out of 80 an A?

75 out of 80 equals a percentage score of (75/80) × 100 = 93.75%, which is an A under most standard grading scales. It falls in the A range (93–96%), so yes — that is a strong result.

What is the difference between a regular grade and a weighted grade?

A regular grade is just the raw score on a single test or assignment. A weighted grade accounts for the relative importance of each assignment — for instance, a final exam may count for 40% of your course grade while quizzes count for 20%. Weighted grading gives a more accurate reflection of overall course performance.

Can I use this calculator for college courses?

Yes. The weighted grade section lets you enter multiple assignments — such as midterms, finals, labs, and homework — along with their respective weights, mirroring how most college courses are graded. Just ensure your weights reflect your course syllabus.
