The hh:mm format expresses time as hours and minutes — for example, 8 hours and 30 minutes is written as 8:30. Decimal hours convert minutes into a fraction of an hour, so 8:30 becomes 8.50 decimal hours. Decimal format is commonly used in payroll systems and billing software.
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. For example, 7 hours and 45 minutes becomes 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7.75 decimal hours. Our calculator does this conversion automatically for every calculation.
Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time (for example, starting at 10:00 PM and ending at 6:00 AM), the calculator automatically accounts for the shift crossing midnight and adds 24 hours to compute the correct duration.

A 12-hour clock runs from 1 to 12 twice per day, using AM (before noon) and PM (after noon) to distinguish morning from afternoon. A 24-hour clock (military time) runs from 0 to 23, with 13:00 meaning 1:00 PM. Select the format that matches how you record your work times.
