Frequently Asked Questions

How does the hours calculator work?

The calculator finds the difference between your start time and end time to determine total elapsed time. It then subtracts any break duration you enter to give you the net hours worked. Results are shown in both hh:mm format and decimal hours for easy use in payroll or timesheets.

What is the difference between hh:mm format and decimal hours?

The hh:mm format expresses time as hours and minutes — for example, 8 hours and 30 minutes is written as 8:30. Decimal hours convert minutes into a fraction of an hour, so 8:30 becomes 8.50 decimal hours. Decimal format is commonly used in payroll systems and billing software.

How do I convert hh:mm digital time to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. For example, 7 hours and 45 minutes becomes 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7.75 decimal hours. Our calculator does this conversion automatically for every calculation.

Can the calculator handle overnight shifts that cross midnight?

Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time (for example, starting at 10:00 PM and ending at 6:00 AM), the calculator automatically accounts for the shift crossing midnight and adds 24 hours to compute the correct duration.

How do I deduct a lunch break or other breaks?

Enter your total unpaid break time in the Break Duration field in minutes. For a 30-minute lunch break, enter 30. The calculator will subtract that time from your gross hours worked to give you the net billable or payable hours.

What is the difference between a 12-hour and 24-hour clock?

A 12-hour clock runs from 1 to 12 twice per day, using AM (before noon) and PM (after noon) to distinguish morning from afternoon. A 24-hour clock (military time) runs from 0 to 23, with 13:00 meaning 1:00 PM. Select the format that matches how you record your work times.

Can I use this calculator for weekly payroll or a full timesheet?

This calculator is designed for calculating hours between two times in a single shift. For a full weekly timesheet with multiple days and shifts, consider using a dedicated timecard calculator that lets you enter each day separately and totals the week.

How are work hours rounded for payroll?

Many employers round work times to the nearest 5, 6, or 15 minutes for payroll purposes. For example, the 15-minute rounding rule (7-minute rule) rounds times between 0–7 minutes down and 8–14 minutes up to the nearest quarter hour. Always check your employer's policy before rounding.
